Good solid unit with only a couple of minor niggles
4/5
Overall the extractor is good. It does a great job of removing cooking smells, smoke, and vaporised grease from the hob below - no smell at all escapes to the rest of the house - and despite a relatively long vent run in our install, it pushes the air along admirably.
The biggest downside is that it's quite noisy - I think some of this is the hard-edged transitions on the vent hose adapter causing unnecessary turbulence in the hose, but the motor is also pretty loud. Given the volume of air it moves some of this is unavoidable, of course, and I expect it'd be better if it were vented directly out the back through a hole in the wall.
The other things are minor annoyances rather than real problems:
- The installation to a wall was a bit of a pain. The wall plugs are a bit oversized and really needed an 8.5mm hole, not the 8mm they specified. There's a few places (adjusting the level on the wall-mounting hooks, and installing the lower two wall-mounting screws) where the unit itself gets in the way of anything other than a stubby screwdriver or a flexible shaft. The upside here is that the wall-mounting kit is massive overkill - it could support an extractor ten times the weight of this one. Our previous extractor was held in by four screws each side into the adjacent cabinets, this is practically welded to the wall in comparison.
(Don't get me wrong, the install is still easily within reach of a normal DIYer. The unit plugs into a regular socket so in most cases you won't need an electrician.)
- The controls are mounted in the middle of a sheet-metal panel, which flexes slightly when you press the buttons. It's not a real problem, it just doesn't feel as high-quality and robust as other Neff equipment we have and it could easily have been fixed with a supporting bar across the panel on the inside.
- I can understand the unit not allowing the extractor to be turned on unless the hood is open, but there's no reason the light couldn't still be operated; it's a bit annoying that the light is on the same interlock circuit as the extractor so we have to pull the hood open if we just want to use it for a bit of extra illumination.
